Pedophile on the loose

LETTING communities know pedophiles are living among them is a bad idea, a prominent New South Wales civil liberatarian says.
Community leaders such as school principals and politicians were not responsible enough to use the information properly, NSW Council for Civil Liberties president Cameron Murphy said.
The man rapes three children, is convicted and serves 14 years. He refuses to undergo any rehabilitation in prison. He is eventually released from prison and then gets 15-month sentence for failing to tell NSW’s Child Protection Register he had a job that gave him access to children. On the face of it I can’t see any signs of Ferguson being a changed man but the civil libertiy people are all up in arms about mothers and fathers demanding their civil liberties. You know… freedom for their children to play and move around the community without being molested.
Opposition Deputy Leader Jeff Seeney, whose electorate includes Murgon, called on all communities that became home to Ferguson to protest so the Government would tighten the laws. Mr Seeney said 519 serious sex offenders had walked free from Queensland prisons in the past five years without completing rehabilitation and they should be put into institutions indefinitely.
The father in me wants him dead. The citizen in me wants him in a position where he can’t molest kids. If he has shown no remorse and refuses rehabilitation then can’t we keep him secure at Her Majesty’s pleasure until we, as the citizens, through our law courts, are satisfied that he wont offend again. Some of these people rape and murder, are convicted, spend time in prison and are then released. They then rape and murder, are convicted…… Do Civil Libertarians notice this cycle. Does it feature in what they say about the rapists liberties and what do they say about the victims liberties? Not much I would think and Cameron Murphy says school principals and politicians are not responsible enough.

  • Some crimes require the death sentence- a painless lethal injection just to show that I have an iota of humanity. Abuse of children shows that such creatures have no humanity and to have them gently put down as we would a sick animal is humane

  • The death penalty would no doubt fix the problem, and I would not shed a tear if this man (and others like him) were sentenced to execution.

But I have to say that the behaviour of the residents made me cringe. I have children (all adults now) and nobody could hate pedophiles more than I do. I wouldnt want him in my neighbourhood either, but the residents behaved like a lynch mob – one short step from dragging the man out and stringing him up.

I dont know the answer to this problem (maybe lifelong imprisonment is the way to go) but the display of barbarity I saw on the news does not help.

  • Your’e right dee-some sense and reason is called for. I expect the media took delight in the people in Murgon. Shoe size IQs, tattoos – almost made for TV to fit in inbetween kiddies programs and Survival or some such other rubbish.

I accept that the thin veneer of civilization over all of us should stop us putting him down but the point is, I think the governments and civil liberty people are abrogating their responsibilities vis a vis public safety. If he ain’t 100% guaranteed cured of the short circuit in his brain then he should not be let loose.

I agree with your’e sentiments, Rose, but nowadays only push for what can be achieved. Is chemical castration an option. I don’t know but ‘m very uneasy with him back on the streets.

  • I think we agree on something. Ferguson is a menace awaiting a suitable opportunity, no doubt, but surely the system which allows him the freedom to take up residence within 100 metres of a school is the real culprit here.

  • Now that Ferguson is in protective police custody, where does he go? I for one believe that his treatment has in some way debased us, but my realistic view has Ferguson placed in some form of institutionalised care. It seems evident that Ferguson has some form of mental illness. The chances of long-term rehabilitation (if ever) are virtually nil. If left in a community, eventually he’s going to be topped, civil libertarians will scream for blood, whilst the rest of the community will feel ‘natural justice’ has been served.

  • If Ferguson has shown no attempts to change or show remorse, he should have stayed in jail.

Ultimately, we all have to take responsibility for our behaviours. He seems to display the typical lack of empathy and understanding that many sexual abusers of children manifest. That is, a complete lack of insight into the impact of what he has done.

The story of his crime is repugnant in the extreme.
