Asylum seekers ‘seasonal’

THE Federal Government denies Australia is becoming a bigger target for illegal boat people, despite six boats making it into Australian waters in recent months. A boat carrying 37 asylum seekers of unknown nationality was intercepted by the navy yesterday about 110 nautical miles north-east of Darwin.
Immigration Minister Chris Evans admitted a number of boat people had arrived in Australia’s waters recently. “That’s partly due to the season, but partly due to the fact there has been some new tactics deployed,” Senator Evans said.
He’s right of course. We are currently undergoing an ALP season and the new tactics reflect that as well.

  • Kev,

We tend to get wound up about small numbers of boat people but meanwhile over at the Department of Immigration:

    • Overstayers are those non-citizens who do not depart by
the expiry of their visa and remain in Australia unlawfully.
    • A total of 47,800 people were estimated to have
overstayed their visas at 30 June 2005

  • Yes, I know there are worse problems but not so obvious. Do we have any department chasing these over-stayers?

  • At least the overstayers were vetted before they were given visas.

Illegals arrive with no ID or paperwork from a safe country which they could have stayed in and applied for refugee status entry to Australia if they were real refugees.
